Schreiben B1 at Goethe and ÖSD: three texts in 60 minutes
Three tasks, three text types, one hour. In the B1 writing exam the winner is not the most beautiful text but the one that covers every point of the task, strikes the right tone and hangs together.
The structure
The Zertifikat B1 was developed jointly by the Goethe-Institut, ÖSD and the University of Fribourg — the writing exam is the same at Goethe and ÖSD. You write three texts; the tasks give a working time for each, and you decide which one to start with.
| Task | Text type | Length | Working time |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | email to a friend | approx. 80 words | 20 min |
| 2 | discussion post: your opinion on a topic | approx. 80 words | 25 min |
| 3 | message to someone you address as Sie — your course teacher, say | approx. 40 words | 15 min |
How it is marked
Each text is marked against four criteria:
- Erfüllung (task fulfilment) — have you covered every point of the task, at the right length and in the right tone (du or Sie)?
- Kohärenz (coherence) — does the text have a recognisable structure, and are the sentences linked?
- Wortschatz (vocabulary) — how wide is it, and do mistakes get in the way of understanding?
- Strukturen (structures) — grammar and spelling: how varied and how secure?
One rule you should know: if task fulfilment gets the lowest band — because the text misses the topic or has fewer than half the required words — the whole task scores zero, however good the language. The three tasks count 40, 40 and 20 points, so the Schreiben module gives a maximum of 100; you pass with 60. At the Goethe-Institut the Zertifikat B1 is modular: you can take or retake Schreiben on its own.
Task 1: the email to a friend
The task describes a situation and gives three points — typically describe something, give a reason and make a suggestion. Cover them in the order of the task and remember greeting, opening, closing and sign-off.
Sample task (our own, in the exam format)
Sie haben vor einem Monat eine neue Arbeitsstelle angefangen. Ihr Freund Jonas hat gefragt, wie es Ihnen dort geht.
- Beschreiben Sie: Wie sind Ihre Kolleginnen und Kollegen?
- Begründen Sie: Was ist besser als bei Ihrer alten Arbeit?
- Machen Sie einen Vorschlag für ein Treffen.
Schreiben Sie eine E-Mail (circa 80 Wörter).
In short: you started a new job a month ago, and your friend Jonas asked how it is going — describe your colleagues, say what is better than in your old job, and suggest meeting up.
Model answer
Lieber Jonas,
Elena
About 80 words, each point in its own paragraph, links with und, deshalb and danach, a suggestion with Wir könnten.
Task 2: the discussion post
You read a short opinion from a forum or guestbook and write your own opinion on the topic. There are no guiding points here — which makes the structure all the more important: refer to the topic, give your opinion with reasons and an example, end with a conclusion.
Sample task (our own)
The topic: should shops open on Sundays too? Markus works until 7 pm all week, finds Saturday shopping too crowded and would welcome Sunday opening.
Model answer
A clear opinion right at the start, two reasons, an example from your own country, a conclusion — and connectors that carry the text: denn, trotzdem, außerdem, deshalb.
Task 3: the message to someone you call Sie
Short, polite and complete: usually you apologise or decline, give a reason, and suggest or ask for something. The tone is semi-formal: Sie, a suitable greeting — Liebe Frau … or Sehr geehrte Frau … — and a polite sign-off.
Sample task (our own)
Ihr Nachbar, Herr Schmitt, hat Sie zu einem Grillfest im Hof eingeladen. Sie können aber nicht kommen.
Schreiben Sie Herrn Schmitt. Bedanken Sie sich, sagen Sie höflich ab und erklären Sie, warum Sie nicht kommen können. Schreiben Sie eine Nachricht (circa 40 Wörter). Vergessen Sie Anrede und Gruß nicht.
Your neighbour has invited you to a barbecue in the courtyard and you can't come: thank him, decline politely and explain why.
Model answer
Lieber Herr Schmitt,
vielen Dank für Ihre Einladung zum Grillfest! Leider kann ich am Samstag nicht dabei sein, weil meine Schwester an diesem Tag heiratet.
Ich wünsche Ihnen und allen Nachbarn einen schönen Abend.
Viele Grüße
Ana Petrović
Time and word count
Approx. 80 words is a guide, not a hard limit. A much shorter text puts task fulfilment at risk; a much longer one earns nothing, costs time for the next task and multiplies the mistakes. Plan two or three minutes per task for proofreading: verb at the end of the subordinate clause? Sie capitalised? All points there?
Typical mistakes
Forgetting one point of the task — the most expensive mistake of all.
In task 2, retelling the forum opinion instead of arguing your own.
In task 3, suddenly writing du or signing off with Liebe Grüße.
A text without paragraphs: examiners then struggle to see where each point is.
And with Rilke?
In the Rilke app you write to tasks in the Goethe and ÖSD B1 format and get an assessment against these four criteria: a score out of 100, the reasons for each criterion and your specific mistakes with corrections. What such an assessment looks like is shown with an example in How Schreiben is marked. More on the formal message is in the guide to the formal email.
