Writing at Goethe B2: arguing a case and writing formally

A forum post of about 150 words, a message of about 100 — and 75 minutes. At B2 it is no longer enough to cover every point: what counts is how well you argue and how well your text hangs together.

The structure

TeilText typeLengthSuggested time
1forum post on a topic, with four content pointsapprox. 150 words50 min
2message in a work situation, to a superior or an institutionapprox. 100 words25 min

You may start with either task. The Goethe-Zertifikat B2 is modular: you can also take or retake Schreiben on its own. The module gives a maximum of 100 points; you pass with 60.

How it is marked

Each of the two texts is marked against Goethe's four criteria: Erfüllung (task fulfilment — every content point, text type, register), Kohärenz (structure, linking), Wortschatz and Strukturen (vocabulary and grammar — range and control). The task itself says what matters: how precisely the content points are covered, how accurate the text is and how well sentences and paragraphs are linked.

And as at every Goethe level: if task fulfilment gets the lowest band, the whole task is worth zero.

Teil 1: the forum post

You give your opinion on a social issue and cover four content points. On top of that come an introduction and a conclusion — the task asks for them explicitly.

Sample task (our own, in the exam format)

The topic is working from home: give your opinion, describe experiences, explain why some companies call staff back to the office, and suggest how to combine the advantages of both.

Model answer

What carries this text: the introduction leads into the topic, each content point gets its own paragraph, a concrete example makes the experience tangible, and connectors like trotzdem, deshalb and also guide the line of thought. The conclusion sums up the writer's position instead of just repeating the introduction.

Teil 2: the message

Here you write in a work situation, usually to a superior: a request, an apology, a suggestion. Again there are four points — and the task asks you to find a suitable order yourself. That belongs to the text structure the examiners mark: a text that simply works through the points in the task's order often reads unnaturally.

Sample task (our own)

Sie organisieren in Ihrer Abteilung den Betriebsausflug. Kurz vorher sagt das gebuchte Busunternehmen ab. Schreiben Sie an Ihre Abteilungsleiterin, Frau Hartmann.

  • Bitten Sie um Verständnis für die Situation.
  • Beschreiben Sie, was passiert ist.

The situation: you are organising your department's outing and the coach company cancels at short notice. Write to your head of department — ask for understanding, describe what happened, propose a solution and ask whether extra costs can be covered.

Model answer

Sehr geehrte Frau Hartmann,

Jana Novak

The order follows the logic of the situation, not the list: first what happened, then the solution, then the question about costs, and finally the request for understanding.

The 75 minutes

The suggested times — 50 minutes for the forum post, 25 for the message — make a good plan. If you start with the shorter message, it is safely done and you can give the longer text your full attention. Plan time for proofreading in both parts.

Typical mistakes

The forum post has no introduction or conclusion — the task names both explicitly.

A content point is mentioned in half a sentence: at B2, examiners expect reasons and examples.

The tone of the message is off: too colloquial for a superior, or so formal that the text sounds stiff.

The connectors repeat themselves: und, aber, weil — and nothing else.

And with Rilke?

In the Rilke app you write to tasks in the Goethe-Zertifikat B2 format and are marked against the four criteria, with reasons and your specific mistakes. Which connectors earn points at B2 is covered in the guide to connectors.
