Connectors: how sentences become a text
Deshalb, trotzdem, zwar … aber, einerseits … andererseits — connectors show how your ideas relate. From B2 on, examiners watch this closely. The hard part is not the meaning but the word order.
Three groups, three word orders
Whether a connector is used correctly almost always depends on where the verb goes. So don't sort connectors by meaning — sort them by what they do to the verb.
| Group | Verb | Connectors | Example | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| position 0 | stays in position 2 | und, aber, oder, denn, sondern | {de | Ich bleibe zu Hause, denn ich bin müde.} |
| position 1 | follows straight away | deshalb, trotzdem, außerdem, allerdings, dennoch, daher, sonst, stattdessen | {de | Ich bin müde, deshalb bleibe ich zu Hause.} |
| subordinate clause | goes to the end | weil, da, obwohl, während, sodass, falls, indem, sobald | {de | Ich bleibe zu Hause, weil ich müde bin.} |
The words in the second group occupy position 1 themselves — so the verb must come right after them. They can also stand later in the sentence: Ich bleibe deshalb zu Hause.
What they mean
| Meaning | position 0 / 1 | subordinate clause |
|---|---|---|
| reason | denn | weil, da |
| consequence | deshalb, deswegen, daher, darum, folglich | sodass |
| contrast, restriction | aber, trotzdem, dennoch, allerdings, jedoch | obwohl, während (= whereas) |
| addition | außerdem, zudem, darüber hinaus | — |
| condition | sonst, andernfalls | wenn, falls, sofern |
| means, manner | dadurch | indem, dadurch dass |
Two-part connectors
They link two parts of a sentence and sound particularly good at B2:
- Zwar ist die Wohnung klein, aber sie ist sehr günstig. — The flat may be small, but…
- Einerseits spart Homeoffice Zeit, andererseits fehlt der Kontakt zu den Kollegen.
- Die Stelle bietet nicht nur ein gutes Gehalt, sondern auch flexible Arbeitszeiten.
- Ich spreche sowohl Englisch als auch Französisch.
- Wir können entweder heute oder morgen telefonieren.
- Er hat weder Zeit noch Lust.
- Je mehr du übst, desto sicherer wirst du. — The more you practise, the more confident you get.
With je … desto, the verb goes to the end of the je part and straight after the adjective in the desto part.
Expressing contrast cleanly
The three most common sources of mistakes at B2 are trotzdem, obwohl and trotz. They say the same thing, but each has its own grammar:
| Word | Type | Example | |
|---|---|---|---|
| obwohl | subordinate clause, verb last | {de | Obwohl es regnete, gingen wir spazieren.} |
| trotzdem | position 1, verb right after | {de | Es regnete. Trotzdem gingen wir spazieren.} |
| trotz | preposition + genitive | {de | Trotz des Regens gingen wir spazieren.} |
Phrases for structuring a text
Connectors link sentences; these expressions structure a whole text — the forum post, the statement of opinion, the presentation:
- introduction: In diesem Beitrag möchte ich auf … eingehen. / Das Thema … betrifft viele von uns.
- ordering arguments: Zunächst … / Ein weiterer Punkt ist … / Hinzu kommt, dass … / Nicht zuletzt …
- counter-argument: Dagegen spricht allerdings, dass … / Man darf jedoch nicht vergessen, dass …
- example: Ein gutes Beispiel dafür ist … / So zeigt etwa …
- conclusion: Zusammenfassend lässt sich sagen, dass … / Alles in allem bin ich der Meinung, dass …

And in the exam?
At B2 and C1, how well your text hangs together is marked explicitly: whether the sentences are linked logically and whether you use varied means to do it. A forum post in which every other sentence starts with und or aber gives marks away. Pick three or four connectors you are sure of for each text — and check the verb every time.
In the Grammatik module of the Rilke app, B2 has topics of its own for connectors and for two-part connectors such as je … desto.
