What the exam contains, part by part — number of tasks, timing and, for listening, how often each recording is played. The figures come from the institutes' sample papers.

One task in 30 minutes: you choose between task A and task B and write a semi-formal or formal message — an email to a training centre, say, or a letter to your landlord — covering four guiding points. There is no word count; the task says «Schreiben Sie möglichst viel» (write as much as you can). Don't forget the greeting and the closing. It is marked against four criteria — Aufgabenbewältigung (task completion), Kommunikative Gestaltung (communicative design), Korrektheit (accuracy) and Wortschatz (vocabulary) — with up to 5 points each. How a formal text is built: The formal email.
The written exam takes 100 minutes without a break: about 25 minutes of Hören, 45 of Lesen and 30 of Schreiben. The oral exam is taken in pairs, lasts about 16 minutes and starts without preparation time.
| Part | Points | Level B1 | Level A2 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hören and Lesen | 45 | 33–45 | 20–32 |
| Schreiben | 20 | 15–20 | 7–14 |
| Sprechen | 100 | 75–100 | 35–74.5 |
The DTZ is one exam for two levels: instead of a pass or a fail, each of its three parts is given a level. Speaking decides first — whoever stays below A2 there gets no certificate at all. You get a B1 certificate with B1 in speaking and B1 in listening and reading or in writing — and, from 1 November 2026, at least A2 in the other written part: both written parts have to be attempted (§ 10 IntTestV). An A2 certificate needs at least A2 in speaking and in one of the two written parts.
The DTZ is the final exam of the integration course (Integrationskurs); g.a.s.t. runs it on behalf of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF). A B1 certificate shows you have completed the language course — German at B1 is required, for example, for a settlement permit and for naturalisation. Which proof is accepted in your case is decided by the authority that asks for it, so check with them. Rilke is independent and not affiliated with the BAMF or g.a.s.t.
It is fixed for each part: Teil 1: 1×; Teil 2: 1×; Teil 3: 1×; Teil 4: 1× (reading time 60 s). No recording is played more often than that.
45 minutes for 5 parts with 25 tasks in total.
The speaking exam is taken in pairs or groups. In Rilke the app plays your partner, so you can practise the dialogue parts on your own as well.
